Five good reasons why you'll want to join our team at Matter

Are you a London-based structural engineering graduate looking to make a positive change? An experienced structural engineer looking for a more fulfilling role? If you share our commitment to people, the planet, partnerships and sustainability, you could be the right fit for Matter.

We nurture talent.

When you come to work with Matter, we ask you what you like doing and what you’re good at. We want to develop your talents, skills and interests and match you with projects where you’ll excel.

“When I hire an engineer, I ask, ‘what are you interested in? What would you like to do in three years?’ We don't intend to have everyone work the same way – that’s what keeps it fun. We appreciate the individuality and uniqueness of all human beings.”

Christina Hsieh, Founding Director of Matter

We value curiosity and learning.

We always ask ‘why’ and ‘what if’ to keep improving and evolving. Curiosity drives us to keep on learning so that we can create ever better, more sustainable structural designs.

"Working with Christina was an amazing experience. I learned structural analysis skills, knowledge of different software, and the practicalities of working on-site. She was very supportive as a leader, constantly mentoring and guiding me to think of solutions. I learned other skills from Christina, too - bouldering and cooking! Her creativity applies both in the construction industry and her lifestyle.”

Daniel Cheung, Technical Manager at CR Construction UK

Our Founding Director, Christina, intends for Matter’s studio in the Design District to be “a place for mentoring – a gathering place for people to meet up and learn from each other.” As part of the Bureau, Matter belongs to a broader community of businesses where everybody wants to learn from each other, help each other and find better ways of working.

We have a culture of care.

Matter is built around people. We care about our work and the changes it can mean for anyone who comes into contact with a project. From looking after our team’s physical and mental health to considering a structure’s impact on the local community, we nurture every aspect of our work.

“You notice that culture of caring from the moment you start working with Matter. It’s a transparent company that doesn't compromise on its expertise, professionalism and strong values. Matter is constantly learning and cares about making a difference.”

Fabia Alves, Social Media Manager at Matter

Honesty and integrity are cornerstones of our human-centred approach. Our Founding Director, Christina, believes that we should treat others as we would like to be treated. “I want employees to feel encouraged and safe. To be who they are.”

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

We live our values at work.

As structural engineers, we have a crucial role to play in the climate emergency. We work with clients to reduce their environmental impact and create truly sustainable buildings, contributing to a greener community.

Working on commercial projects enables us to support community-based projects, which currently make up 20% of our work. We work with clients in the public sector, housing associations, charities, community organisations, environmental consultants, architects, private developers and individuals throughout the UK.

Sharing our values is as important as your engineering skills

You could be a great fit for Matter if you have:

·       a UK degree and a love of engineering

·       an open-minded attitude and the ability to think independently

·       knowledge of UK building regulations and skills in simple calculations

·       a principled, honest approach and the drive to make a positive difference.
